I began with a simulation: two galaxies drifting toward each other, each carrying billions of stars and the quiet certainty that neither would remain exactly itself. On screen, the movement looked graceful. Long arms of light stretched across darkness. Bright centres passed close, separated, then curved back again as gravity continued the conversation.

The phrase galactic collision sounds like an explosion enlarged beyond comprehension, but the reality is stranger. Stars are separated by such enormous distances that direct collisions between them are unlikely. The violence is gravitational. Orbits are disturbed. Gas compresses. Familiar structures stretch into new shapes. What looks like impact is really an extended rearrangement.

I kept pausing the animation because it was difficult to decide what I was looking at. Was it destruction, creation, or simply change at a scale where those categories stop being useful?

When does a thing stop being itself?

A galaxy is easy to imagine as a single object because we see it as one image. But it is not one thing in the ordinary sense. It is a system held together by motion, mass, distance, and time. Its identity is real, yet distributed. Change the relationships between its parts and the whole becomes something else.

That is what makes a collision philosophically unsettling. There may be no dramatic instant when one galaxy ends and another begins. Instead, identity is revised across millions of years. A shape becomes less recognisable, then more recognisable as something new. The border between before and after is too wide for a human mind to point at.

We prefer transformation to have a scene: the goodbye, the decision, the final message, the day we moved. Cosmic change reminds us that some endings happen as processes rather than events.

The danger and usefulness of metaphor

There is a temptation to make the universe sentimental. We see two galaxies approaching and immediately turn them into lovers, enemies, or wounded versions of ourselves. Metaphor makes scale feel intimate, but it can also flatten the science into a lesson it never promised to teach.

Still, I do not think metaphor is useless. The important thing is to keep it honest. A galaxy does not fear becoming unrecognisable. It does not negotiate the terms of change. But watching matter reorganise without asking permission can reveal something about why transformation feels so personal to us. We are the ones who need continuity. We are the ones who want a clear explanation for what remains.

The universe is not speaking directly to us. Sometimes we hear ourselves more clearly when we look at it anyway.

A future held inside a model

Simulations do not show one guaranteed future. They begin with measurements, assumptions, margins of error, and models of forces too large to observe across their full timescale. Change an initial condition slightly and the path can change with it. The image looks definite, but underneath it is a carefully constructed possibility.

I like this tension. Science can be rigorous without pretending uncertainty has disappeared. A model is not weaker because it includes what is unknown. In fact, its honesty about uncertainty is part of what makes it trustworthy.

There are days when I want the same permission in ordinary life: to make the best model I can, act from the evidence available, and admit that the future is not obligated to follow the cleanest projection.

Uncertainty is not the absence of knowledge. Sometimes it is the most accurate form knowledge can take.

Beautiful catastrophe

The images are beautiful. That fact feels almost inappropriate. Tidal tails become luminous ribbons. New stars may form where gas is compressed. A familiar spiral can be disturbed into a shape no artist would have invented from scratch. The event is physically violent and visually exquisite.

Beauty does not cancel damage. It also does not belong only to peaceful things. We often want aesthetics to confirm morality, as if what looks beautiful must be good and what hurts must look ugly. Nature refuses that arrangement. Storms, fires, collapsing stars, and broken structures can all produce images that hold the eye.

Perhaps beauty is not approval. Perhaps it is attention. It tells us that something contains more complexity than our first category can hold.

What remains after the shape changes

If two galaxies merge, neither simply wins. Their material becomes part of a larger system. Some structures disappear. Some persist in altered form. The result carries evidence of both histories without remaining identical to either one.

I find that more interesting than the usual story of survival. Survival is often imagined as preserving a self untouched. But almost nothing survives that way. To continue is to absorb, discard, adapt, and sometimes become unrecognisable to an earlier version of yourself.

The final galaxy in the simulation is not a moral reward for enduring collision. It is simply what comes next. Maybe that is enough. Not every transformation needs to justify its cost by becoming better. Sometimes the honest claim is smaller: it became different, and difference created possibilities that did not exist before.
